On September
29th, 2007 at 11:00 am mothers and babies at sites across Canada and the United States will compete to set the record for the most babies breastfeeding at one time.
The winners of the competition will be the region (province or territory or state)
with the most babies participating as a percentage of the birth rate. To level
the playing field between large and small, each site will be entered into one
of four groups determined by birth rate.
Why this challenge? Breastfeeding has many well-documented
benefits including better health for both mothers and babies. However, many
women fail to meet their own breastfeeding goals and wean their children
prematurely, well before meeting recommended guidelines. Two of the biggest
hurdles for mothers continue to be lack of support and marginalization by the
community.
This event takes place as part of the celebration of
World Breastfeeding Week in Canada.
It is sponsored by the Quintessence Foundation, a non-profit group providing

Dr. Jack Newman has been assisting breastfeeding mothers and babies for years. However the Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and Institute receives no government funding, despite servicing hundreds Toronto’s mothers each year. In order to raise badly needed funds, the clinic is staging an indoor yardsale on September 29 (see attached flyer). There will also be a breastfeeding challenge, raffle, and a chance to sign a petition asking the government for stable funding.

It may almost be time for back to school, but odds are, if you’re pregnant it still feels like the dog days of summer. And then some. Blame it on massive mama hormones and those extra few pounds, say nothing of that adorable little foot poking your bladder. Not exactly a recipe for staying cool and hydrated. But, staying well hydrated is especially important during pregnancy – mamas can get heat stroke, heat cramps or worse.
Stay hydrated by remembering a water bottle everywhere you go, and if you feel light headed or dizzy, lay on your left side and put a cool cloth on your forehead and neck. Talk to your healthc are provider about adding electrolytes (we like Emergen-C brand) in your water bottle a couple of times a day, and remember – all that water weight in your ankles and hands actually makes dehydration a higher risk.

ARM-UR (Association for Research on Mothering at the University of Regina), whose mandate is to provide a forum for the discussion and dissemination of research on mothering, and Demeter Press, extend this call for papers to all who wish to contribute to this exciting and important interdisciplinary (book) anthology to be published in spring, 2009. Mothering Canada is seeking creative non-fiction, personal reflections, scholarly writing, and critical essays, as well as poetry and art, on themes associated with motherhood in Canada in all disciplines.
